BODY CHECKING UPDATE
HOCKEY CANADA BULLETIN
Hockey Canada recently hosted their Semi-Annual
meeting in Calgary over in mid-November. A significant decision
was finally determined which will have a direct affect on
not just the MHL next season but all of minor hockey governed
by Hockey Canada.
Pilot Project History
A study has been on going for the past 10
years to determine the most appropriate age to introduce
body checking. As part of this pilot project, the MHL (as
a member of the Greater Toronto Hockey League and subsequently
the Ontario Hockey Federation) has been involved with body
checking at the Minor Atom ‘A’ and Atom ‘A’
divisions.
OHF Motions at the Hockey Canada Semi-Annual
The final report was reviewed in Calgary at
the Hockey Canada Semi-Annual meeting. The OHF initiated
a motion to have the national standard for the implementation
of body checking be moved from Minor Peewee to Minor Atom
(based on the findings in the pilot project). That motion
was defeated. A second motion was initiated that was intended
to allow those players currently participating in the study
to be permitted to continue body checking next season, in
essence grandfathering them for 1 year. That motion was
also defeated.
Final Results
What this all means is that the Body Checking
study is completed and the National Standard for the implementation
of body checking is Minor Peewee. Beginning in the 2008-09
season, players will not be permitted to body check until
their Minor Peewee year. Players who are in the study (including
GTHL players) will be permitted to complete the current
season utilizing body
checking at the Minor Atom and Atom levels.
